Sustainability

We focus on sustainability in our daily operations. Sustainability encompasses three key dimensions: climate and environment, social conditions, and economy. We firmly believe that everyone can and must contribute to creating a more susainable future. Our motto is “No one can do everything, but everyone can do a little”. Together, we can help move society in the right direction.

1 – Sustainability strategy

The UN’s 17 sustainable Development Goals provide direction for our operations, and we work to continuously to put these goals into practice. Based on the three dimensions Climate and Environment, Social conditions, and Economy, we have identified the following sustainability targets as particularly relevant for us:

Goal No. 14 – Life below Water

– This goal is closely linked to the core of our business. We take an active role in reducing ocean pollution and marine litter, and in contributing to the sustainable management of marine resources.

Goal No. 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production

– We focus on the reuse and recycling of resources, and work to replace environmeltally burdensome materials and inputs with more sustainable alternatives.

Goal No. 4 – Quality Education

– We facilitate competence development and continous learning for all employees. We are also an approved apprenticeship company, contributing to the development of skilled workers for the future.

Goal No. 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

– We continuously work on improvements and technological development to increase resource efficiency and support sustainable business development.

Goal No. 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities

– By being located in Flatraket, we contribute to maintaining and developing a sustainable local community and supporting the surrounding region.

Goal No. 17 – Partnerships for the Goals

– Collaboration is a common thread throughout our sustainability work. When many people and organisations each contribute in small ways, we can collectively help move society in the right direction.

2 – Sustainability Assessment and Product Development

We continuously work to make our products more sustainable. The product must create value for our customers, while we strive to safeguard social conditions throughout the entire value chain and reduce their negative environmental impact.

Here is an extract of the results from our sustainability work.

COLTO – Coalition of Legal Toothfish Operators

We are proud members of COLTO. The organization promotes the sustainable management and catching of toothfish in the Southern Ocean, with a strong focus on sustainable fishing practices and reducing unwanted environmental impacts. As part of this work, we have developed a line with an integrated weight that increases the sinking speed of the line. This helps reduce seabird mortality while also making fishing more efficient by allowing the line to reach the bottom faster. We have also developed a more environmentally friendly impregnation for use in the Southern Ocean. The traditional tar treatment has been replaced with a more environmentally friendly alternative to black coal tar, Appretan impregnation.

Recycling of Gillnets

We place a strong emphasis on the reuse and recycling gillnet materials and gillnet buses. In collaboration with ASVO Måløy, we clean and prepare used lead rope and float lines for reuse in new assemblies. Used gillnet buses are sent for recycling. We received the bridge builder award from ASVO in 2018.
