We produce specially designed mussel collector ropes, also known as spat collectors. These ropes provide an artificial substrate in the sea where mussel larvae can naturally settle and attach.
Our mussel collector ropes are made from durable polyester fibres, with a structure that provides numerous suitable attachment points. The collector itself is constructed as a sleeve filled with small glass marbles. This provides the rope with both weight and the right structure, while keeping the fibres open to create optimal conditions for mussel larvae to settle and attach.
Mussels begin their life as free-floating larvae in the water column before attaching themselves to a suitable surface. Once they have settled on the collector and developed into spat, they are transferred to traditional mussel farming ropes for further growth.
Mussels are farmed without feeding, as they filter nutrients directly from the water.
The result is a simple, efficient and sustainable way to establish mussel production, based on the natural processes of the marine environment.
